Flat-pack furniture: assemble it yourself or hire a pro?
Not every job needs a professional. Here is how I’d decide if I were the client.
When DIY is perfectly fine
- Simple, low items: a bedside table, a small KALLAX, a basic desk
- You have time, patience and a cordless drill
- Nothing has to be mounted to the wall
When it is worth calling a pro
- Tall or heavy furniture that must be anchored (PAX, full wardrobes)
- Sliding doors and anything that needs precise levelling
- Kitchens and built-in appliances
- When you simply value your weekend more than the fee
The real cost of mistakes
Particleboard does not forgive. A stripped cam lock, an over-tightened hinge or a panel built in the wrong order often cannot be undone — you buy a replacement part and wait. A two-hour “saving” can turn into a week of waiting plus the cost of a professional fix anyway.
My rule of thumb: if the item is tall, expensive, or goes on the wall, get it done right the first time. For everything else, enjoy the build.
